Quote: from Dr Igor Kot President of Medicine & Chernobyl ( Belarus ) Following the the accident at Chernobyl in April 1986, the republic of Belarus, a former Soviet Republic, received 70% of the radioactive fall-out caused by the explosion, which created contamination 90 times greater than that of Hiroshima. More than 2 million people, including hundreds of thousands of children are still living in these contaminated areas.Since the disaster, childhood cancer of the Thyroid has increased dramatically; children also suffer from stomach disorders and many children have been born with genetic disorders as a consequence of the radiation suffered by their parents. Investigations have shown that a child removed from the contaminated areas for one months respite care, suffers fewer ailments during the winter months. These children are in need of proper nutrition in order to strengthen their immune systems to minimise the physical and psychological effects of the nuclear disaster.
It is important, due to shortage of proper nutrition in Belarus and the need to recuperate the immune system, that the children should be removed from the radioactive zone, even for a short time. Medical investigations show that a child taken away for one month can survive better during the winter months and the radioactive measuring equipment demonstrated elimination or a very low level of radioactivity after such a vacation.
